Some extra info: the main problem in the city is assault and armed robbery. Don't know anyone who got insulted at street randomly. Car being assaulted or stolen are not common as well. Homes being broken I think this is more common in low density areas with big houses (where people don't usually live), so they break when there is no one.

It truly depends where you live. In Meireles and Aldeota you can be fairly safe (of course taking all common safety procedures as in any big city). I do almost everything by walking, day and night, and nothing ever happened to me. Although, there are some neighborhoods I would not go at all, especially at night.

If you are coming to Brazil, please do not go to this city its very dangerous even at daylight, go to other cities like Vitoria, Blumenau, Florianopolis and Joinville, they are way safer

I lived in Fortaleza for many years, if you are a tourist, you are alright, if you live in a nice area, you're good, not as bad as people say, but you need to watch out where you go, avoid slams as much you can during the night.
